Since 2023, the United States has been celebrating Columbus' Day for about 86 years.
There are over a million Americans who are older than Columbus Day.
Italian immigrants have been celebrating Columbus Day for about 157 years. That's only a century and a half in the long game.
Whose idea was it to celebrate a slave trader?
Ask the Catholic Church...

We stopped on the way home from the Y, where we had gone for a Mother’s Day Dunk in the hot tub. Needed to get some juice and something to cook for dinner. I stayed in the car while SALM went inside. A minute later he texted me “!!!” Followed by this picture of the flower section:

I wish for a great and peaceful memorial day to those celebrating, and especially those grieving/paying respects to the fallen
And for my many many friends outside of the United States
What is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day is a holiday in the United States celebrated on the last Monday of May.
It is to honor the dead and their mourning counterparts of those who have died while serving in the United States Military.
This is Arlington National Cemetery, a national cemetery in the United States dedicated to dead soldiers and veterans. It has become a symbol in itself for Memorial Day
There is usually a ceremony that can be viewed on the TV, local parades, and it is traditional to buy a poppy flower to honor the dead.
Taps is played, and a moment of silence is often done at least once in ceremonies/similar to honor the dead.
Equivalent Holidays
Remembrance Day
Heroes' Day
ANZAC Day
International Day of UN Peacekeepers
Yom HaZikaron
Volkstauertag
Memorial Day (South Korea)
Dodenherdenking
And More...

Oddly enough, we do have Christmas stores that I believe are open year-round or at least not just the month or two before Christmas?
Which tells you where our priorities are (out of whack, as per uszh).
are you telling me americans have stores that open up SPECIFICALLY for halloween and just. dont exist any other time of the year. you people are insane

I present the worst thing I've seen served this year for Thanks Giving. Gelatin shrimp.

I have such a weird relationship with Thanksgiving.
Because, on the one hand, it's nice to be together with family (blood or chosen) and reflect on the good things you have in life. I think that's important and good for our mental health.
But at the same time, it's a holiday rooted in America trying to cover up its horrible and bloody history of colonialism and the genocide of native tribes by making up a story that isn't even really true about two specific groups of native and european people getting along.
So part of me likes it as a holiday based on what it means in its modern sense, but I also feels gross to be celebrating it based on its history.
